Searching for the dao of China, the author also explores the concepts of te (innate power) and wu wei (effortlessness) as they apply to the ancient and modern culture, as well as to ones daily life. On a meditational journey that took him to temples and monasteries, Schwartz seeks to describe the experience of meditation from inside, ultimately relating his lifelong involvement in zazen to the Confucian structure or Chinese society.

An award-winning playwright, Schwartz is the author of the novel The Extraordinary Pupfish of Calaveras County. As a teenager, the author became so fascinated with Chinese philosophy and poetry that he went on to study Mandarin and classical Chinese at Harvard.

He lives in a redwood grove in California with his partner and their Queensland Heeler.
